Discussion about Duke Ellington And His Orchestra - Masterpieces By Ellington In Uncut Concert Arrangements
Hawk Flying
THIS is the mother of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: It is the first opportunity to listen to extended versions of songs from this mighty Orchestra's songbook. Previously only available on shellac with the 3-minutes-limitation dictating what could be worked out in that amount of time, now this fantastic ensemble, one of the great bands ever (and not your U2, Depeche Mode, Deftones mediocrity), can stretch out. Ellington also had an ear for the best recording technique available: so if you want to know what an excellent band could achieve in state-of-the-art sonic fidelity in 1950 - the exact recording date of these sessions - this is for you. Whereas the 12-Inch-Single from the 1980s mainly encouraged lack of imagination to go on for a considerably longer time in order to keep the crowds swaying, this music represents the transition from an orchestra that had shifted from dance music to a complexity that required to be appreciated by a seated audience, while still be able to cater for the dancers. The impressionistic accretion and dissolving of sound clouds (this reed-section was TOP) in Mood Indigo must have brought tears to the eyes of Stravinsky. Suddenly they could reproduce on record what they had developed during the past 20 years. To name this LP "Masterpieces" is no understatement. It shows a gorgeous band in mid-flight. They had recorded fantastic music back in 1929 and they would continue to do so until 1974. Not everything a masterpiece. But who, apart from Joy Division and The Jesus Lizard, would only record masterpieces? Even Captain Beefheart and Joni Mitchell are known to have published tripe.
